The boundary between watching a movie and living in it is officially disappearing. Apple and Blackmagic Design have teamed up to launch a new era of Apple Immersive Video, a format designed specifically for the Apple Vision Pro. This isn't just standard virtual reality; itâs a high-fidelity cinematic experience that uses 180-degree 3D video and Spatial Audio to put viewers directly inside the story.
At the heart of this revolution is the Blackmagic URSA Cine Immersive camera. This powerhouse features a custom dual-lens system and dual 8K sensors that capture 90 frames per second with 16 stops of dynamic range. According to fxguide, this hardware allows filmmakers to capture depth and detail that traditional cameras simply can't match, while DaVinci Resolve 19 provides the specialized tools needed to edit these massive files.
Academy Award-winning director Edward Berger, known for All Quiet on the Western Front, recently showcased the potential of this tech with his short film Submerged. Released on Apple TV+, the film places the audience inside a leaking WWII submarine. Berger noted that the technology allows for a "new cinematic language," moving away from traditional cuts to focus on physical presence and spatial narrative.
