The Supreme Court of New York has ordered Creative Artists Agency (CAA) co-founder Michael Ovitz to testify in actress Julia Ormond’s ongoing lawsuit against the agency. According to TheWrap, the ruling follows Ovitz's failure to appear for a previously scheduled deposition on June 11, 2024. Ormond, known for her roles in Sabrina and Legends of the Fall, filed the legal action in October 2023, alleging that CAA facilitated a 1995 sexual assault against her by producer Harvey Weinstein.
The court's decision marks a significant development in the discovery phase of the case, which centers on claims of negligence and breach of fiduciary duty. Ormond’s legal team argues that Ovitz’s testimony is vital for understanding the agency’s internal culture and its historical business ties with Weinstein during the 1990s. While Ovitz left CAA for The Walt Disney Company in August 1995, the court determined he may possess relevant information regarding how the agency handled complaints against the disgraced mogul.
The litigation continues to progress as the court manages ongoing disputes over evidence and witness testimony. While Disney and Miramax were also named as defendants, the court denied their motions to dismiss in August 2024, ensuring they remain active in the litigation. CAA continues to face the legal action alongside these companies as both sides move forward with the discovery phase of the proceedings.
