Dave Grohl is finally setting the record straight regarding the Foo Fighters’ decision to part ways with drummer Josh Freese. In a February 2026 interview with Zane Lowe for Apple Music 1, Grohl revealed that the band’s split from Freese in May 2025 followed months of internal discussions. While the move caught some fans by surprise, Grohl described it as a necessary collective choice for the group's evolution.
According to Grohl, the disconnect was partly due to Freese’s own feelings about the material. Grohl noted that Freese had mentioned the band’s music didn't "really resonate" with him in the way they had hoped. This provides new context to Freese’s previous comments, where the drummer expressed surprise at his dismissal and hinted at having his own theories about why he was let go from the legendary rock outfit.

Despite the professional parting of ways, Freese continues to be recognized as a powerhouse in the industry. He recently received a Lifetime Achievement Award for his extensive contributions to music. Meanwhile, the Foo Fighters have officially moved into a new era by naming Ilan Rubin, known for his work with Nine Inch Nails and Angels & Airwaves, as their new permanent drummer.
