Warner Bros. is officially returning to the simulation. The studio announced on April 3, 2024, that a fifth Matrix film is in active development. Drew Goddard, the Academy Award-nominated writer of The Martian and director of The Cabin in the Woods, has been tapped to write and direct the new installment. This project marks the first film in the iconic sci-fi franchise not directed by Lana or Lilly Wachowski.

Jesse Ehrman, President of Production at Warner Bros. Motion Pictures, revealed that the project was sparked by a fresh pitch from Goddard. "Drew came to Warner Bros. with a new idea that we all believe would be an incredible way to continue the Matrix world," Ehrman said in an official statement. Lana Wachowski, who directed 2021's The Matrix Resurrections, will remain involved as an executive producer alongside Sarah Esberg of Goddard Textiles.

While the film is confirmed, the studio has not yet announced a formal title or release date. It also remains unclear if franchise leads Keanu Reeves or Carrie-Anne Moss will reprise their roles as Neo and Trinity. The Matrix franchise has earned approximately $1.8 billion at the global box office since its 1999 debut, though the most recent entry, The Matrix Resurrections, earned a more modest $159 million worldwide during its pandemic-era release.
