Netflix is officially pulling the plug on its interactive TV experiment. On December 1, 2024, the platform will remove 20 of its 24 interactive specials, leaving only a handful of titles available for viewers. This move marks the end of a format that gained global attention with the release of Black Mirror: Bandersnatch in 2018. While these programs allowed viewers to make choices that influenced the plot, the company is now refocusing its resources elsewhere.
Only four interactive titles will survive the purge. Subscribers will still be able to watch Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Kimmy vs. the Reverend, Ranveer vs. Wild with Bear Grylls, and You vs. Wild. Fan favorites slated for removal include Jurassic World Camp Cretaceous: Hidden Adventure, Trivia Quest, and Boss Baby: Get That Baby! Netflix spokesperson Chrissy Kelleher confirmed to The Verge that the technology "served its purpose" but is now being limited as the company explores other tech frontiers.
The decision highlights the immense challenges of creating interactive content, which often requires significantly higher production costs due to filming multiple branching paths. Former Netflix gaming executive Mike Verdu recently transitioned to a new role as Vice President of "GenAI for Games," suggesting the streamer is trading FMV (full-motion video) choices for more advanced artificial intelligence and traditional gaming. Despite the success of early titles, the niche format failed to achieve the widespread adoption Netflix originally anticipated.
