Horror fans, brace yourselves! Scream 7 officially premieres in theaters today, February 27, 2026. The latest installment in the iconic slasher series promises fresh scares and a significant return for franchise veteran Neve Campbell, who reprises her legendary role as Sidney Prescott after her absence from Scream VI due to a salary dispute. This time around, the film sees Scream creator and longtime writer Kevin Williamson step into the director's chair for his first time helming a chapter in the beloved franchise, co-writing the screenplay with Guy Busick.
The road to Scream 7's release has been anything but quiet, marked by a series of high-profile cast changes. Original directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett departed due to scheduling conflicts, leading to Christopher Landon briefly taking the helm. However, the production faced a major upheaval in November 2023 when lead actress Melissa Barrera, who played Sam Carpenter in the previous two films, was fired by Spyglass Media Group over social media posts concerning the Israel-Hamas conflict, which the company deemed antisemitic. This was quickly followed by Jenna Ortega's exit from her role as Tara Carpenter, initially reported as a scheduling conflict with Wednesday Season 2, but later clarified by Ortega herself as being due to the creative team changes and Barrera's dismissal.
These significant departures necessitated a reported $500,000 script rewrite, shifting the narrative focus to Sidney Prescott and her family. Joining Campbell, returning stars include Courteney Cox as Gale Weathers, Jasmin Savoy Brown as Mindy Meeks-Martin, and Mason Gooding as Chad Meeks-Martin. The film also introduces new faces like Isabel May as Sidney's daughter and Joel McHale as Sidney's husband, Mark Evans. With its storied past and a fresh vision under Williamson, Scream 7 aims to continue the franchise's legacy while navigating a new, more family-centric narrative.
