The O’Connell family is officially getting the band back together. John Hannah has confirmed he will reprise his fan-favorite role as Jonathan Carnahan in the upcoming fourth installment of The Mummy franchise. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Hannah is set to reunite with Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz for the first time since 2001’s The Mummy Returns.

This new chapter is being developed as a direct sequel to the original films, effectively hitting the reset button on the series' timeline. The production will reportedly disregard the events of the 2008 film The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor—which famously saw Weisz replaced by Maria Bello—as well as the 2017 Tom Cruise reboot. This creative shift aims to bring Universal Pictures’ iconic monster series back to its action-adventure roots.

Fans won’t have to wait much longer for the adventure to begin, as the film has been handed a high-profile theatrical release date of May 19, 2028. Reports from Bloody Disgusting and JoBlo indicate that the project is prioritizing the chemistry of the original cast. While specific plot details are still under lock and key, the return of the original trio marks a massive milestone for a franchise that has been dormant for over a decade.
