The mystery of the missing American Idol prizes has a new twist. During a recent episode of The Kelly Clarkson Show, the Season 1 champion shocked fans by revealing she never received the car promised to her when she won the competition in 2002. Speaking with guest Jennifer Love Hewitt, Clarkson also clarified that her widely publicized "million-dollar prize" was actually a career investment and recording contract rather than a direct cash payment.
However, Season 6 winner Jordin Sparks had a very different experience. Appearing on Today with Jenna & Sheinelle, Sparks confirmed that she did receive her vehicle after winning the title in 2007. "I got my car," Sparks told hosts Jenna Bush Hager and Sheinelle Jones, even noting that she still possesses the vehicle today. Sparks defended the production's early days, suggesting that the first season of any major show can be "a little crazy" as the team works out the logistics of prizes and sponsorships.

Sparks expressed sympathy for Clarkson, who blazed the trail for all future contestants on the Fox (and now ABC) hit. "I hope they give that girl her car," Sparks added during her interview, referring to the original oversight by producers at Fremantle and 19 Entertainment. While Clarkson's win launched a massive career, the revelation about her missing Ford prize highlights the growing pains of the reality TV juggernaut during its debut year.
