Get ready for a captivating period drama! Leo Woodall, known for his work in projects like The White Lotus, has officially joined the cast of the film adaptation of Edith Wharton's classic novel, The Custom of the Country. He'll star opposite Sydney Sweeney, who is not only leading the film as the fiercely ambitious Undine Spragg but is also serving as a producer.
The eagerly anticipated movie is financed by Studiocanal and will be helmed by Josie Rourke, who is also adapting the screenplay from Wharton's 1913 novel. Rourke previously directed Mary Queen of Scots and has expressed her excitement for Sweeney in the role, calling Undine Spragg "the original dangerous woman" and noting it's as if Wharton wrote the part for her.
The Custom of the Country follows Undine Spragg, an ambitious Midwestern woman determined to ascend New York's elite social ladder at the turn of the 20th century. With her beauty and unwavering ambition, Undine fearlessly navigates high society, often courting controversy. Studiocanal plans a theatrical release across its territories, including the UK, France, Germany, Australia, New Zealand, Poland, and Benelux. Production is expected to commence soon, with Nina Gold handling casting for the ensemble around Sweeney and Woodall.
