Michael Mando, best known for his acclaimed performance as Nacho Varga in Better Call Saul, is officially heading to the cockpit. Mando has joined the cast of Netflix’s highly anticipated live-action Gundam film, expanding an ensemble that already features Sydney Sweeney, Noah Centineo, and Jason Clarke. The project is being written and directed by Jim Mickle, the filmmaker behind the hit Netflix series Sweet Tooth.

The film is a joint production between Netflix, Legendary Pictures, and Bandai Namco Filmworks (formerly Sunrise). While specific plot details and character descriptions for Mando remain under wraps, the story is rooted in the iconic 1979 anime franchise created by Yoshiyuki Tomino. The live-action adaptation is scheduled to begin principal photography this April in Australia, marking a major milestone for a project that has been in development for several years.

Mando’s casting adds further prestige to a production that has quickly become one of Netflix's most watched sci-fi developments. Beyond his work on Better Call Saul, Mando is well-recognized by fans for his role as Mac Gargan in Spider-Man: Homecoming and his voice work as Vaas Montenegro in the Far Cry video game series. For director Jim Mickle, Gundam represents a massive shift in scale as he brings the legendary "Mobile Suits"—giant piloted robots—to life for a global audience.
