Netflix is taking fans back to the winter of 1985 with the official trailer for Stranger Things: Tales From '85, an upcoming 10-episode animated series. Premiering April 23, the spin-off bridges the gap between the show’s second and third seasons, following the core Hawkins crew as they navigate a town blanketed in snow and a new paranormal mystery. Series creator Matt Duffer told TheWrap that while the Mind Flayer's story has been largely explored, this series will "answer some lingering questions" from the franchise's mythology.
The series introduces Nikki Baxter, a 14-year-old punk-rock transfer student voiced by Odessa A'zion. Described as the group's "missing puzzle piece," Nikki joins Eleven, Mike, and the rest of the Party to confront a sinister breed of vine-like creatures emerging from the Upside Down. While the series takes visual cues from '80s favorites like The Real Ghostbusters, the animation is a modern hybrid produced by Flying Bark Productions, the studio behind What If...? and Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur.
Because the series revisits the characters as young teenagers, a new voice cast has stepped in to replace the original live-action actors. The roster includes Brooklyn Davey Norstedt as Eleven, Luca Diaz as Mike, Braxton Quinney as Dustin, Elisha “EJ” Williams as Lucas, Ben Plessala as Will, and Jolie Hoang-Rappaport as Max Mayfield. Fan-favorite Steve Harrington will be voiced by Broadway star Jeremy Jordan, while Brett Gipson takes over as Chief Jim Hopper.
Executive produced by Matt and Ross Duffer, Shawn Levy, and Dan Cohen, the series aims for a "Saturday-morning cartoon" feel with a cinematic edge. For those who can’t wait for the streaming debut, Netflix is offering a sneak peek with the first two episodes hitting select theaters nationwide on April 18. Supporting cast members also include Janeane Garofalo as Anna Baxter and Lou Diamond Phillips as Daniel Fischer.
