The Jardinette Apartments, a cornerstone of Los Angeles modernism, have officially reopened in Hollywood following a massive $5 million restoration. Originally completed in 1928, the four-story complex was the first major U.S. commission for legendary architect Richard Neutra. Developer Cameron Hassid, head of Apollo Capital, spearheaded the project to rescue the 43-unit landmark from decades of neglect and severe code violations.
The meticulous renovation adhered to strict historic preservation standards while integrating 21st-century infrastructure. Work included restoring the building's signature "ribbon" windows and monochromatic palette, features that originally signaled the arrival of the International Style in America. Hassid told the Los Angeles Times, noting the complexity of balancing modern safety codes with Neutra’s original minimalist vision.
Located at the corner of Manhattan Place and Marathon Street, the Jardinette is now poised to enter its next chapter. Hassid plans to sell the property, with discussions underway regarding the potential for units to serve as affordable housing. The project marks a significant win for Los Angeles heritage, proving that even the most decayed architectural icons can be successfully revitalized for modern residency.
