Newark is officially preparing for its close-up. Newark Public Schools Superintendent Roger León has announced the launch of New Media High School, scheduled to open its doors in September 2026. The institution will focus on providing students with specialized training in film, television, and digital content creation to meet the demands of a rapidly growing local industry.
This educational initiative follows a banner year for the Garden State's entertainment sector. According to the New Jersey Motion Picture and Television Commission, film and TV production spending in New Jersey reached a record-breaking $833 million in 2024. The surge is driven by aggressive state tax incentives and the arrival of major Hollywood players looking for production space outside of traditional hubs.
The school is strategically positioned to benefit from massive private investments in the area. Lionsgate is currently constructing a $194 million, 12-stage studio complex in Newark’s South Ward, which will serve as a primary neighbor to the new school. Additionally, Netflix is developing a major production facility at the former Fort Monmouth site, further increasing the demand for a skilled local workforce.
By integrating industry partnerships into the curriculum, New Media High School aims to create a direct pipeline for Newark students into high-paying media roles. Officials noted that the school will offer hands-on experience with modern production equipment, ensuring that the next generation of cinematographers, editors, and digital creators are homegrown in New Jersey.
