Nicole Kidman joined Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show in 2024 to clear up a major rumor about her legendary AMC Theatres commercial. The actress confirmed that she received zero payment for the 2021 ad campaign titled "We Make Movies Better." Kidman explained that her decision to star in the clip was driven by a desire to support the film industry during the COVID-19 pandemic.
To bring the vision to life, Kidman recruited a high-profile creative team. Writer Billy Ray and director Jeff Cronenweth, the cinematographer on her film Being the Ricardos, collaborated on the project, which officially debuted in September 2021. Kidman told Fallon she did it for "the purest of intentions" because she missed the experience of watching films on the big screen with an audience.
Since its release, the ad has become a massive pop culture phenomenon, inspiring memes and fan merchandise. Despite its viral success and longevity in AMC locations across the country, Kidman maintains it was strictly a passion project. "I did it for nothing," Kidman stated during the interview, reinforcing her commitment to the theatrical experience.
