Politico has officially found its next top editor. Jonathan Greenberger will step into the role of editor-in-chief starting May 1, 2026, marking a significant transition for the political news powerhouse. Greenberger, a seasoned media veteran, previously served as a vice president at Politico and spent years as the Washington bureau chief and executive producer of "This Week with George Stephanopoulos" at ABC News.
Greenberger succeeds John Harris, the site's co-founder, who has led the newsroom since its inception in 2007 alongside Jim VandeHei. Harris isn't leaving the company; instead, he will move into a newly created role as chairman. In this position, Harris is expected to focus on the outlet's long-term editorial strategy and its continued international expansion under the ownership of Axel Springer.
The leadership change was first reported by the Wall Street Journal on Sunday, March 29. Greenberger’s return to Politico is seen as a move to bolster the newsroom's editorial depth as it navigates an increasingly complex political landscape. According to internal communications, Greenberger will oversee day-to-day operations and the publication’s signature coverage of the White House, Congress, and policy across the globe.
