Ruth E. Carter is officially heading back to the Oscars. The legendary costume designer earned a nomination for Best Costume Design for the film Sinners at the 98th Academy Awards. This marks Carter’s fifth career nomination, further extending her record as the most-nominated Black woman in the history of the Academy.
If Carter wins on March 15, 2026, she will make history as the first Black individual to earn three competitive Oscars. She previously secured wins for her groundbreaking work on Black Panther and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, both released by The Walt Disney Company. Her current nomination highlights her continued dominance in the craft of cinematic fashion.
The upcoming ceremony will be held at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. Carter's competition in the category remains fierce, but her legacy is already secure. From her early days working with director Spike Lee to her blockbuster success with Ryan Coogler, she remains a pioneer for Black creatives in the film industry.
