Ryan Coogler and his production company, Proximity Media, are officially bringing the 1990s sci-fi phenomenon Animorphs to Disney+. The project, which is currently in early development, was first reported on April 3, 2026. This new series is part of Coogler’s multi-year overall television deal with The Walt Disney Company, following his success with the Black Panther franchise.
Writer Bayan Wolcott is attached to pen the script and serve as an executive producer for the adaptation. The show will draw from the 54-book series authored by Katherine Applegate and Michael Grant. The story follows five teenagers—Jake, Rachel, Cassie, Marco, and Tobias—who are granted the power to transform into any animal they touch to defend Earth from a secret invasion by parasitic aliens known as Yeerks.

This marks the second major television attempt for the franchise after Nickelodeon aired a live-action Animorphs series in 1998. While Scholastic Entertainment has previously explored film adaptations, this project at Disney+ aims to bring the expansive lore of the books to a new generation. Proximity Media, which also produced Judas and the Black Messiah and Creed III, will oversee the creative direction alongside Disney Branded Television.
