Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE) is officially winding down Pixomondo, the visual effects and virtual production powerhouse it acquired in late 2022. According to reports from Televisual and Animation World Network, the closure follows a strategic decision to consolidate Sony’s VFX efforts. Once Pixomondo completes its existing contractual obligations and current projects, its operations will be phased out entirely.

The move aims to streamline Sony’s internal resources under its primary Oscar-winning studio, Sony Pictures Imageworks. While Pixomondo is famous for its work on high-profile series like The Boys and House of the Dragon, Sony intends to focus its future visual effects pipeline within its established internal infrastructure. The virtual production division, Clara, is also scheduled to shut down as part of this restructuring.

Not all of Pixomondo’s assets will disappear. The company’s dedicated Research and Development (R&D) arm is set to be absorbed into Sony Group’s broader corporate R&D operations. This shift comes roughly three years after Sony purchased Pixomondo from Mayfair Equity Partners, marking a significant pivot in Sony's long-term strategy for virtual production and post-production services.
