Billie Eilish is officially heading to the big screen. The Happier Than Ever singer is reportedly set to make her feature film acting debut in a new adaptation of Sylvia Plath’s semi-autobiographical novel, The Bell Jar. Eilish will step into the iconic role of Esther Greenwood, a character whose descent into mental illness in 1950s New York has captivated readers for decades.

Oscar winner Sarah Polley is signed on to write and direct the screenplay. Polley, who recently won an Academy Award for Women Talking, brings a celebrated track record of nuanced storytelling to the project. The film marks a significant step for Eilish, who previously earned critical praise for her small-screen turn in the Prime Video series Swarm.

The production features heavy-hitting support from Plan B Entertainment, StudioCanal, and producer Joy Gorman Wettels. Focus Features is currently in negotiations to handle the distribution of the film. While no official release date has been set, the collaboration between a global pop phenom and an Oscar-winning director has already made this one of the most anticipated literary adaptations in years.
