The Walt Disney Company is leaning hard into the future of tech. During the Morgan Stanley TMT Conference on March 2, 2026, Disney CFO Hugh Johnston provided new details on the company's massive $1 billion equity investment in OpenAI. First announced in December 2025, this landmark three-year deal secures a major role for artificial intelligence in the House of Mouse.
This partnership opens the vault to over 200 characters from the Disney, Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars franchises. Fans will soon be able to utilize these icons within OpenAI’s Sora and ChatGPT tools to create their own video content. According to Johnston, the move is designed to meet audiences where they are already creating and sharing stories in the digital space.
The integration goes beyond just content creation for users. Disney plans to weave these advanced AI tools directly into the Disney+ platform to enhance how viewers interact with their favorite movies. By combining world-class storytelling with OpenAI’s generative tech, the studio aims to redefine the streaming experience for its millions of global subscribers.
