Middle-earth is expanding its ranks with Hollywood royalty. Kate Winslet has officially joined the cast of The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum in a major, undisclosed female lead role. This marks a significant addition to the project, which sees Andy Serkis pulling double duty as both the director and the star reprising his iconic role as Gollum.
The film is being produced by the original trilogy's creative powerhouse: Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens. Set chronologically between the events of The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring, the story focuses on the search for the creature Gollum. Fans can also look forward to familiar faces, as Ian McKellen is confirmed to return as Gandalf, while Elijah Wood is expected to return as Frodo Baggins.
Production for the highly anticipated feature is slated to begin in New Zealand between May and October 2026. This timeline puts the film on track for its scheduled theatrical release on December 17, 2027. While Winslet's specific character remains a mystery, her involvement further cements the massive scale of this new chapter in the Tolkien cinematic universe.
