Kirsten Dunst is officially trading the big screen for the blocky world of Mojang Studios. The Civil War star has signed on to join the cast of the untitled sequel to A Minecraft Movie, where she will portray the iconic character Alex. This casting confirmation follows Dunst publicly expressing her interest in joining the franchise back in August 2025, reportedly motivated by her children's love for the game.

The sequel, produced by Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures, is already slated for a theatrical release on July 23, 2027. Director Jared Hess is returning to helm the project, which will see Jason Momoa and Jack Black reprise their roles from the first film. According to reports from TheWrap and Consequence, Dunst's character, Alex, is expected to be a central figure in the continuing cinematic adaptation of the world's best-selling video game.

While the first Minecraft film debuted on April 4, 2025, the studio is moving quickly to secure the future of the franchise. By adding Dunst to the ensemble, the production continues its trend of casting high-profile talent for the live-action adaptation. The project marks another major collaboration between Hess and the primary cast as they expand the lore of the Overworld for global audiences.
