Pop Mart and Sony Pictures Entertainment are bringing the viral sensation Labubu to the big screen. The Chinese toymaker announced on March 18, 2026, that it has officially partnered with Sony to develop a live-action and CGI hybrid feature film based on the mischievous character. This marks the first major Hollywood production for Pop Mart as it looks to turn its collectible toy empire into a global media franchise.
Director Paul King, the filmmaker behind Wonka and Paddington, is attached to direct the project. King will also co-write the script alongside Steven Levenson, whose previous credits include Dear Evan Hansen and Tick, Tick... Boom!. The creative team aims to translate the unique aesthetic of the The Monsters collection into a narrative format for international audiences.
Labubu’s original creator, Kasing Lung, will serve as an executive producer on the film. While a specific release date and casting details remain under wraps, the partnership highlights the massive commercial impact of the Labubu figure, which has seen explosive sales across Asia and North America. Sony Pictures will oversee the development and global distribution of the hybrid feature.
