Lyft is stepping up its commitment to social responsibility, launching a significant new initiative to combat human trafficking. Following a partnership announced in February 2024, the ride-share giant officially rolled out an in-app tutorial in August 2024, developed in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Blue Campaign. This powerful tool aims to educate more than one million Lyft drivers across the United States and Canada on how to identify and report potential instances of human trafficking.
The comprehensive tutorial, now accessible in Lyft's driver-only Learning Center, provides crucial information on recognizing the signs of human trafficking and guidance on contacting appropriate authorities. This initiative builds on an initial rollout in Las Vegas in February 2024, timed with Super Bowl LVIII, acknowledging that large events can see an increase in such crimes. Lyft CEO David Risher emphasized the company's stance, stating, "Human trafficking — the illegal exploitation of a person — is a heinous crime. We have zero tolerance for it."
DHS Secretary Alejandro N. Mayorkas highlighted the importance of such public-private partnerships, noting that drivers interact with millions of riders annually, making them vital in identifying and disrupting these crimes. Ameena Gill, Vice President of Safety and Customer Care at Lyft, expressed hope that the driver community, facilitating hundreds of millions of rides yearly, will become an even greater force for good. This effort reinforces Lyft's ongoing dedication to safety, which includes past collaborations with organizations like Polaris (providing free rides for survivors) and Businesses Ending Slavery and Trafficking (BEST) and the Dressember Foundation (driver education).
