The clock is ticking for Hollywood as SAG-AFTRA enters formal contract negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP). With the current agreement set to expire on June 30, 2026, union leaders are focused on one major threat: generative artificial intelligence. Actors want strict guardrails to prevent studios from using digital replicas without consent or fair pay.
At the 32nd Annual Actor Awards on March 1, SAG-AFTRA National Executive Director Duncan Crabtree-Ireland emphasized the need for unity across the industry. This call for solidarity comes just before the Writers Guild of America (WGA) begins its own negotiations with the AMPTP on March 6. The union is signaling a united front against studios like Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount Global.

While both sides have agreed to a strict media blackout, the primary goals are clear. Beyond AI protections, the union is seeking improved residuals for streaming content. As the industry watches closely, the next few months will determine if Hollywood can reach a deal or if production will face another major standstill. For now, the focus remains on ensuring that technology serves human performers rather than replacing them.
