Twenty-six years later, the mystery is solved! David Arquette has officially taken "full responsibility" for the polarizing, short bangs sported by Courteney Cox's character, Gale Weathers, in the 2000 horror film, *Scream 3*. Arquette, who plays Dewey Riley in the franchise, made the candid confession during a February 2026 interview with Extra TV at the star-studded premiere of *Scream 7*.

"I'm sorry for the Scream 3 bangs," Arquette stated, clarifying his original vision for the look. He revealed that he had suggested a "Bettie Page" style, envisioning very blunt bangs to complement Cox's dark hair for a "little pinup thing for Gale Weathers." However, as fans know, the execution didn't quite match the inspiration.

Courteney Cox, who was also on the *Scream 7* red carpet, lightheartedly addressed the enduring conversation around her *Scream 3* hair. She joked that if it was indeed Arquette's idea, "he should never say that because it's a terrible idea." Cox has previously acknowledged that while she wanted her character to have different hairstyles in each *Scream* movie, the infamous short fringe was a "big mistake." Despite her regret, she noted, "at least it's a conversation piece for the rest of time".

*Scream 7*, distributed by Paramount Pictures, premiered at the Paramount Pictures studio lot on February 25, 2026, and was released in the United States on February 27, 2026.
