Atlanta's experimental music scene is getting a major jolt this spring. Tatsuya Nakatani, the acclaimed avant-garde percussionist and composer, is officially heading to the Eyedrum Art & Music Gallery. As part of the long-running Monday Night Creative Music Series, Nakatani is scheduled to perform on March 30, 2026, bringing his otherworldly soundscapes to a local audience.
Originally from Japan and now residing in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, Nakatani is far from your average drummer. He is best known for his custom-adapted bowed gongs, which he plays using hand-carved Kobo bows. His setup also includes an array of cymbals, drums, and singing bowls, creating a texture of sound that Creative Loafing has previously highlighted for its intense, improvisational energy.
This performance marks a rare stop in the Southeast for the artist, who spends much of the year touring in his converted van. Known for his Nakatani Gong Orchestra projects, this solo appearance will focus on his mastery of acoustic resonance and silence. Fans of experimental sound can catch the event at Eyedrum’s Ralph David Abernathy Boulevard location in Atlanta.
