Universal Pictures is doubling down on the big screen experience. The studio officially announced a major update to its theatrical exclusivity window, ensuring movies stay in cinemas significantly longer before hitting digital platforms. For the 2026 film slate, Universal Pictures releases will have a guaranteed minimum of five weekends in theaters. This marks a notable shift from the 17-day minimum window the studio utilized following the pandemic.
The commitment to exhibitors will grow even stronger in 2027. Starting that year, the exclusivity period will expand to seven weekends, which equals approximately 45 days. This move aligns Universal Pictures with the industry-standard 45-day window currently utilized by competitors like Warner Bros. Pictures and Walt Disney Studios. While the shorter window allowed for quick pivots to Premium Video on Demand (PVOD), this change signals a return to prioritizing long-term box office performance.

Specialty film fans will see less of a change in release timing. Focus Features, the indie and prestige division of Universal, will largely retain its existing 17-day window for most of its theatrical releases. According to reports from TheWrap and Boxoffice Pro, this bifurcated strategy allows smaller films to find home audiences quickly while ensuring blockbusters have the space to dominate the multiplex for over a month.
