Long-standing CBS News producer Mary Walsh has departed the network after 46 years, sending an exit note to colleagues on Friday, February 28, 2026. In her memo, Walsh reportedly cited concerns over a "politicized newsroom shift," stating, "We've been told to aim our reporting at a particular part of the political spectrum. Honestly, I don't know how to do that."
Walsh's departure comes as one of nearly a dozen CBS News producers who have opted for a voluntary buyout. This exodus is occurring amid a significant transformation within the network, led by Editor-in-Chief Bari Weiss and "Evening News" anchor Tony Dokoupil. This transition has reportedly fueled allegations of a political bias leaning towards Republicans. CBS News President Tom Cibrowski offered a "glowing tribute" to Walsh on a staff-wide call. However, "Evening News" executive producer Kim Harvey reportedly countered Walsh's claims, stating, "That is simply not true. Here at the 'Evening News,' we value our editorial independence, and CBS News leadership has never asked us to aim our reporting in any political direction."
The internal tensions at CBS News appear to be broader than a single departure. Approximately two weeks prior, producer Alicia Hastey also criticized the network's direction under Weiss and Paramount Skydance chief executive David Ellison, noting a "shifting set of ideological expectations" that made reporting difficult. These departures highlight ongoing internal scrutiny as CBS News navigates its editorial future.
