The Writers Guild of America (WGA) is heading back to the bargaining table. Starting next week, guild negotiators will meet with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) to hammer out a new contract. This follows an overwhelming vote from WGA members, who officially approved a bargaining agenda that puts modern technology and worker stability at the forefront.
Artificial intelligence remains the biggest talking point of the season. The WGA is demanding specific protections and compensation for writers when their scripts and creative materials are used to train AI models. Beyond the digital frontier, the guild is also prioritizing traditional wins, including significant boosts to healthcare contributions and general pay increases to counter industry-wide inflation.
This upcoming session marks a critical moment for the industry, which is still finding its footing after the 148-day strike that concluded in 2023. With representatives from studios like Disney, Netflix, and Warner Bros. Discovery sitting on the AMPTP side, the stakes are high. Both parties are looking to avoid further production shutdowns while ensuring the future of creative labor remains sustainable.
