The glitz and glamour of the 2026 Writers Guild Awards in Los Angeles, originally set for Sunday, March 8, at the JW Marriott Los Angeles L.A. LIVE, have been put on hold. The Writers Guild of America West (WGAW) announced the cancellation of its West Coast ceremony, attributing the decision to an ongoing strike by its own staff union, the Pacific Northwest Staff Union (PNWSU).
The PNWSU, representing approximately 115 non-supervisory WGAW employees, has been on strike since February 17, 2026. WGAW President Michele Mulroney affirmed the guild's commitment to labor solidarity, stating, "As a labor union, we would not ask our guests to cross a picket line to attend the awards show." The PNWSU's demands include improved pay raises, robust protections against artificial intelligence in the workplace, and fair grievance procedures. The union has also alleged unfair labor practices by WGAW management, which the WGAW denies.
While the Los Angeles event is canceled, the Writers Guild of America East (WGAE) ceremony will proceed as scheduled on March 8, 2026, at the Edison Ballroom in Manhattan, New York City. The WGAE's staff union is organized with United Steelworkers and is not currently on strike. For those impacted by the Los Angeles cancellation, all sponsorship and ticket sales will be refunded, and the WGAW plans an alternative celebration for its 2026 honorees and nominees, including James Cameron, Don Reo, and Mstyslav Chernov, at a later date.
