Xsolla, the global video game commerce company, has released the Spring 2024 edition of "The Xsolla Report: State of Play." The findings reveal a massive shift in player behavior, with 77% of gamers now identified as "platform omnivores." This means the vast majority of players no longer stick to a single device, choosing to play across mobile, PC, and consoles based on their environment and game preference.
The report identifies India, Turkey, and Southeast Asia as the primary drivers of future industry expansion. India currently boasts over 500 million gamers, making it a critical market for developers looking beyond traditional Western audiences. Additionally, Xsolla notes that artificial intelligence is becoming a standard tool in development, helping studios streamline everything from asset creation to automated customer support.
To maximize revenue in this changing landscape, the report emphasizes the rise of Direct-to-Consumer (D2C) web shops. By selling directly to players, developers can bypass the standard 30% platform fees typically charged by major app stores. Xsolla indicates that this move allows studios to retain significantly higher profits, which is becoming vital as the industry adapts to a global-first, multi-platform environment.
