Universal Pictures has officially announced that the long-awaited Murder, She Wrote film will arrive in theaters on December 22, 2027. Academy Award winner Jamie Lee Curtis is confirmed to take over the role of Jessica Fletcher, the iconic amateur sleuth made famous by the late Angela Lansbury. The original CBS series was a television staple for 12 seasons, running from 1984 to 1996.
The big-screen reboot will be directed by Jason Moore, who is best known for helming the musical comedy hit Pitch Perfect. The screenplay is written by Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo, the writing duo behind the 2023 financial drama Dumb Money. Producers for the project include Amy Pascal alongside Phil Lord, Chris Miller, and Aditya Sood under Lord Miller's first-look deal with Universal.

Jamie Lee Curtis has frequently expressed her passion for the project in recent months. Speaking to Entertainment Tonight on the red carpet for Freakier Friday, Curtis said, "Oh, it's… happening. We're a minute away, but yeah, very excited." The film marks a significant return to Cabot Cove, Maine, for a property that reached nearly 25 million weekly viewers at its peak on television.
Universal's holiday 2027 release strategy positions the mystery film as major counter-programming against blockbuster titles. The movie will open just five days after Avengers: Secret Wars and The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum hit theaters. It will share its specific December 22 debut date with Sony Pictures' upcoming animated feature, Buds.
