Katherine Hartley Short, the daughter of beloved actor and comedian Martin Short, tragically passed away on Monday, February 23, 2026, at the age of 42. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's office officially confirmed the cause of death as suicide, resulting from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at her Hollywood Hills residence.
The Short family released a heartfelt statement on Tuesday, expressing their immense sorrow. “It is with profound grief that we confirm the passing of Katherine Hartley Short,” the statement read. “The Short family is devastated by this loss, and asks for privacy at this time. Katherine was beloved by all and will be remembered for the light and joy she brought into the world.” Known for her work as a licensed clinical social worker, Katherine was also an advocate for mental health initiatives, collaborating with organizations like Bring Change 2 Mind.
Katherine was one of three adopted children of Martin Short and his late wife, Nancy Dolman, who passed away in 2010 after battling ovarian cancer. She is survived by her brothers, Oliver Patrick Short and Henry Hayter Short. In response to this devastating news, Martin Short has postponed several upcoming dates for his comedy tour with longtime friend and collaborator Steve Martin, including shows scheduled for February 27 in Milwaukee and February 28 in Minneapolis.
