Stephen Colbert turned a White House photo controversy into a massive April Fool’s Day spectacle on Wednesday night. During The Late Show, the comedian addressed reports that Getty Images recently scrubbed an "unflattering" photo of Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt from its library. Colbert didn’t just show the picture on a screen; he projected the massive image across the entire dome of the Ed Sullivan Theater.
According to TheWrap, the photo originated from a Thanksgiving turkey pardoning event. Colbert claimed the wire service removed the image after becoming aware that the White House "did not approve" of the shot. "It’s a new controversy from the White House, and it’s extra crispy stupid," Colbert told his audience, noting that the administration's attempt to hide the photo only guaranteed it would be seen by everyone in Midtown Manhattan.
While Getty Images reportedly stated they were not directly ordered to remove the picture, Colbert quipped that the administration "pulled a mother-in-law" by providing passive-aggressive feedback. The late-night host feigned sympathy for Leavitt, acknowledging the angle was "not good for anybody," before urging viewers to follow their honor and "not look" at the giant projection above their heads.
